GREAT TORRINGTON -

A town with
hidden beauty
Drive
along the main road through Great Torrington and you might wonder
what all the fuss is about. Turn into the town centre with its
pretty Square and you will find out.
Great Torrington is at the very heart of Tarka Country on a steep
ridge with spectacular views over the River Torridge valley. You
can see the beautiful countryside spread out before you from the
South Street car park. This is a proud town which realises that
its future lies in its past.
There’s fishing on the river,
a golf course where visitors are welcome and the Tarka Trail — a
long-distance foot and cycle path which passes through varied and
exceptionally tranquil scenery which has changed little since
Henry Williamson wrote the story of Tarka the Otter back in the
1920s.
Great Torrington is a vibrant
community with a tremendous pride in its civil ware heritage and a
wealth of events are organised throughout the year.

WESTWARD HO!
Founded in 1863 and named after
Charles Kingsley's novel, the village is known for its remarkable
pebble ridge.
Northam Burrows at
the opposite end of the beach to Westwood Ho!. For a winter walk
why not park at Northam Burrows, walk along the beach to Westward
Ho! and buy some chips before walking back. Many Horses and ponies
can be seen grazing behind the large stony ridge of the beach. In
my opinion a safer beach for younger children. With enough room to
take dogs all year. What value! Check out the tide table-2 miles of
golden sands but no beach when the tides in!
dogging area for those who want to know!
Northam Burrows is Excellent for
kite surfers, kite buggys, kite landboards and speed sailsurfing. Tip :check out the tide tables for
North Devon- Third party liability insurance is compulsory for all
traction kite sports on the beach. Keep the far Send of the beach
and fly or sail north towards the estuary/Saunton end. For lessons
or tuition/ with equipment hire on West ward Ho! please
